"A friend gave it to me, but I don't have a vase as nice as yours." Mary snapped, turning the conversation back to me.

The flower sitting in a vase next to my bed was the same purple flower the king cut from the garden. My mind was spinning at what this could mean. Mary was hiding more than her resentment for me, much more. Maybe her complaints about me were a way to keep the conversation from turning to her.
